About the Event
ICC has arranged for a docent-led tour of The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition, Fashion, and Identity exhibition at the NY Historical. "A sari has long been more than just clothing: It has been a symbol of empowerment, of global trade, of diplomatic soft power and of resistance" (NYT). The exhibition examines the sari's role in shaping South Asian identity, community, and culture in New York City from the Gilded Age to the present. Objects span from the 18th century to today and includes a pre-1892 photograph of one of the first South Asian women to study medicine in the U.S. and contemporary artwork.
