About the Event
Highly skilled immigrants are an essential part of the US workforce filling critical labor gaps in medicine and other STEM jobs. The US immigration system, however, takes an inhuman and unfair approach toward highly skilled immigrants and their families, the vast majority of whom are Indian.
ALIEN intimately follows five Indian high-skilled immigrants and their families as they build lives and families in this country in an uphill battle toward their American Dream. (83 minutes)
Vidyut Latay's debut documentary "Beyond Silence" screened twice on PBS, at film festivals, has won awards, and been a part of Gallaudet University and UCLA curriculum. Vidyut worked on the award-winning documentaries "Waiting for Superman" and "Kailash.". She was an Executive Producer for India's television networks Zee TV and Zoom (The Times of India group). As a high-skilled legal immigrant with first-hand experience maneuvering through a spectrum of visas, Vidyut brings personal knowledge of the broken immigration system to ALIEN.
Following the screening, Vidyut will discuss the critical need for immigration reform with CT Mirror investigative reporter Katy Golvala, Katy has reported on the mutual fund industry, infrastructure investment, and the Asian American experience in Connecticut. Katy earned a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and a master’s degree in Business and Economic Journalism from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.
